Recently, varenicline (Chantix®) was approved to help people stop smoking. This is a medication that binds to nicotine receptors and prevents smoking from causing pleasurable effects. Chantix also helps to decrease nicotine withdrawal symptoms.
 
Many people take Wellbutrin SR® instead of Zyban for smoking cessation. Wellbutrin SR is similar to Zyban, but is more likely to be covered by insurance (see Wellbutrin to Quit Smoking).
 

Final Thoughts on Zyban Alternatives

Several Zyban alternatives are available, including other medications and counseling. Talk with your healthcare provider if Zyban is not working for you, or if you are experiencing bothersome Zyban side effects. You may need to try one of the other smoking cessation treatments mentioned in this article.
