How Does Tobramycin Inhalation Powder Work?

As the name implies, tobramycin inhalation powder contains the antibiotic tobramycin. It works by killing bacteria. The drug does this by interfering with bacteria's ability to make proteins, which are necessary for the bacteria to grow and multiply.
 

Can Children Use It?

Tobramycin inhalation powder is approved for use in children age 6 years and older. It has not been adequately studied in children younger than age 6. Talk with your child's healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this medication in younger children.
 
In clinical studies, children age 6 to 19 years old were more likely to experience changes in taste with this medication than people over the age of 20.
 

Is It Safe for Older Adults to Use Tobramycin Inhalation Powder?

Tobramycin inhalation powder has not been adequately studied in older adults. Therefore, it is not known whether the medicine is safe or effective for these people. In general, older adults may need to be monitored more closely for side effects.
 

What About Off-Label Uses?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medicine for treating something other than cystic fibrosis. This is known as an "off-label" use. Tobramycin inhalation powder may be used off-label to treat bacterial lung infections in people who do not have cystic fibrosis.
