Side Effects of Tiotropium

In clinical studies, common tiotropium side effects included upper respiratory infections, dry mouth, and sore throat. These reactions are typically minor -- if they even occur -- and are easily treated. However, if you develop wheezing, chest pain, severe constipation, or other serious side effects, contact your healthcare provider right away.

Side Effects of Tiotropium: An Introduction

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with tiotropium bromide (Spiriva®); however, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Tiotropium Side Effects

Some side effects with tiotropium, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Worsening breathing problems
  • Severe constipation
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • An irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
  • Vision changes
  • Chest pain
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as"
 
    • Unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
