What Is Roflumilast Used For?

How Does This Medicine Work?

Roflumilast inhibits an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type-4 (PDE4). By inhibiting PDE4, roflumilast increases the level of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) in cells. It is not entirely clear how this action helps with COPD treatment, although it is thought that anti-inflammatory actions may be involved.

Is It Safe for Children to Take Roflumilast?

This medication is not approved for use in children (usually defined as people younger than 18 years of age). The safety and effectiveness of roflumilast has not been studied in this age group. This makes sense, as COPD usually occurs in older adults rather than in children.

Can Roflumilast Be Used Off-Label?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medication for treating something other than COPD. This is called an "off-label" use. At this time, there are no universally accepted off-label uses for roflumilast.
