Revatio Warnings and Precautions

With Revatio, there are many precautions to be aware of, including warnings relating to who should not use the drug and potentially serious complications that may occur. For example, if you have heart disease and take Revatio, you may be at a significant risk of developing a heart attack, stroke, or sudden death. Also, Revatio can cause interactions with certain other medications, such as nitrates.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking Revatio® (sildenafil citrate) if you have:
 
  • Had a heart attack, stroke, or irregular heartbeats in the past six months
  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Kidney disease, such as kidney failure (renal failure)
  • Liver disease, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver failure
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension)
  • Blood circulation problems
  • A disease called pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD)
  • A history of vision problems, such as loss of eyesight
  • An eye problem called retinitis pigmentosa
  • Any problem with the shape of your penis, including angulation, cavernosal fibrosis, or Peyronie's disease
  • Dehydration, which occurs when you lose a large amount of fluids, such as when you experience vomiting, diarrhea, or excess sweating without drinking enough liquids
  • A stomach ulcer or bleeding disorder
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Cancer of the blood cells or bone marrow, such as multiple myeloma or leukemia
  • A history of a prolonged or painful erection (priapism)
  • Any allergies, including to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
     
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
 
  • Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Breastfeeding.
     
Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking, including nitrates, medicines for erectile dysfunction, other prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
