Revatio Side Effects

Commonly reported side effects of Revatio include headaches, indigestion, and diarrhea. While these reactions generally require little or no treatment, it is possible to experience potentially serious side effects while taking this drug. For example, if you experience a sudden loss of vision, chest pain, or difficulty breathing, make sure to notify your healthcare provider right away.

An Introduction to Revatio Side Effects

As with any medicine, Revatio® (sildenafil citrate) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. Most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Revatio. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Revatio

Revatio has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received the Revatio, while another group was given a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.

In these studies, the most common Revatio side effects included:

  • Headaches -- in up to 46 percent of people
  • Indigestion or heartburn -- up to 13 percent
  • Feeling red or warmness in the face, neck, or upper chest (flushing) -- up to 10 percent
  • Nosebleed -- up to 9 percent
  • Diarrhea -- up to 9 percent
  • Muscle aches or pains -- up to 7 percent
  • Insomnia -- up to 7 percent
  • Shortness of breath -- up to 7 percent
  • Rash -- up to 6 percent
  • Elevated temperature or fever -- up to 6 percent
  • Stuffy nose -- up to 4 percent.

Other common side effects (occurring in up to 3 percent of people) included:

  • Irritation or inflammation of the stomach (gastritis)
  • Irritation or inflammation of the sinuses (sinusitis)
  • Tingling, burning, or numbness of the skin (paresthesia)
  • Vision problems, including trouble telling the difference between blue and green, increased sensitivity to light, or blurred vision.
