Revatio and Breastfeeding

According to the manufacturer of Revatio (sildenafil), breastfeeding women should use this medication with caution. It is not known if this drug passes through breast milk, as clinical studies would expose a helpless infant to potentially dangerous risks. Before using Revatio, women who want to nurse their child should ask their healthcare providers about the potential risks.

More Information on Breastfeeding and Revatio

No research has been done to see if Revatio passes through breast milk. Although this lack of information is certainly frustrating, it is important to understand that studies of medications are rarely done in breastfeeding women, as this would usually expose an infant (who will not directly benefit from the medication) to possible risks.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Revatio use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
