What Is Omalizumab Used For?

How Does Omalizumab Work?

Omalizumab is an asthma medication that belongs to a group of drugs called monoclonal antibodies. Monoclonal antibodies are used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including asthma. Omalizumab works by binding to IgE antibodies. IgE antibodies play an important role in allergic reactions. By binding to IgE antibodies, omalizumab blocks their effects. By preventing allergic reactions, omalizumab can help to prevent asthma attacks.

Omalizumab Use in Children

Omalizumab is approved for the treatment of asthma in children 12 years of age and older. Be sure to talk with your healthcare provider about the best ways to treat childhood asthma.

Off-Label Omalizumab Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend omalizumab for something other than preventing asthma attacks. At this time, off-label omalizumab uses can include:

  • Preventing severe food allergies
  • Preventing other types of allergies, such as seasonal allergies.
