Nicotrol Inhaler Directions for Use

There are specific directions for using the Nicotrol® Inhaler (nicotine inhaler). Getting the right dosage is important because nicotine is a highly addictive drug, and too much can increase your risk for side effects.

The Nicotrol Inhaler comes with a reusable inhaler mouthpiece (a thin plastic tube) and cartridges that contain nicotine (the active medication). As you inhale through the mouthpiece, nicotine is delivered into your mouth, where it is then absorbed into the body. The normal dosage is 6 to 16 cartridges daily for 12 weeks.

After 12 weeks of treatment, the dose is usually gradually reduced over 6 to 12 more weeks. Some people may be able to abruptly stop using the medication, but most people will need to slowly reduce their dosage. Your healthcare provider can help you find a strategy that works best for you when it is time to stop using this medication.
