Nicotine Patches and Gum

Available without a prescription, nicotine gum (Nicorette® Gum) is a medication used to help people stop smoking (smoking cessation).

For many people, nicotine gum may work effectively to gradually wean them off nicotine. However, some people may need an alternative method if nicotine gum does not help reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Some of these alternatives include:

  • Other nicotine replacement products
  • Prescription medications
  • Nonmedication treatment.

Some of the other nicotine replacement products, such as the nicotine patch (Nicoderm® CQ®, Habitrol®), are available over-the-counter (OTC) and may be a better option for some people. For example, some people who have difficulty chewing nicotine gum due to jaw or teeth problems may find that nicotine patches are a better option for them.
