The recommended starting dosage of nicotine gum will depend on how many cigarettes you usually smoke each day. Over the 12-week treatment plan, the number of pieces of gum you chew each day will slowly be decreased. This will help gradually wean your body off of nicotine and help reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings.
An Introduction to Your Dosage of Nicotine GumYour initial dose of nicotine gum (Nicorette® Gum) will depend on how soon after waking up you normally smoke your first cigarette of the day. The dose is then slowly decreased to gradually wean your body off nicotine.
Following the recommended dosing guidelines for nicotine gum will improve your chances of successfully quitting smoking.
Nicotine Gum Dosing Guidelines for Smoking CessationNicotine gum comes in 4-mg and 2-mg strengths. The strength you use will be based on how soon each morning you smoke your first cigarette. Continue to use this strength for your entire 12 weeks of treatment.
People who smoke within 30 minutes of waking up in the morning should use 4-mg nicotine gum. People who smoke their first cigarette of the day more than 30 minutes after waking up should use the 2-mg gum. The recommended nicotine gum dosage for both the 4-mg and 2-mg gum is as follows:
- Weeks 1 through 6: chew one piece of gum every one to two hours
- Weeks 7 through 9: chew one piece of gum every two to four hours
- Weeks 10 through 12: chew one piece of gum every four to eight hours.
Pick a "quit day" and start using nicotine gum on that day. Try your best not to smoke, but keep trying even if you don't succeed.
Using nicotine gum for the complete 12 weeks of treatment will increase your chances of successfully quitting smoking. If you continue to have cravings or feel you still need to use nicotine gum longer than 12 weeks, talk to your healthcare provider.
