Lungs Home > Generic Revatio

A few different companies, such as Apotex and Greenstone LLC, make a generic version of Revatio (sildenafil citrate). Although the generic versions are considered equivalent to the brand-name drug, they might contain different inactive ingredients that could cause problems for some people.

Can I Buy Generic Revatio?

Revatio® (sildenafil citrate) is a prescription medication belonging to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It is used to improve exercise ability and to slow down worsening conditions in people with pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs).
Brand-name Revatio is made by Pfizer Inc. However, it is also available in generic form.

Availability of Generic Revatio

Generic Revatio is available in one strength -- Sildenafil 20 mg tablets. It is made by manufacturers such as:
  • Apotex
  • Mylan
  • Greenstone LLC.
The version made by Greenstone LLC is actually an “authorized generic,” meaning that it is the actual brand-name medication that is just packaged and sold under a generic name. It is exactly the same as Revatio in every way (it is even made by Pfizer), except it comes in a bottle with a generic name.

Is Generic Sildenafil as Good as Revatio?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.
An “AB” rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic Revatio versions currently available have an “AB” rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Revatio.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
