Lungs Home > Nicotine Gum and Blood Pressure

Even though nicotine gum (Nicorette® Gum) is available without a prescription, this product may not be the best smoking-cessation product for some people. For instance, nicotine gum is known to raise blood pressure, so if you have hypertension, talk to your healthcare provider to make sure this product is right for you.
Nicotine gum works by releasing nicotine as it is chewed, which can cause an increase in your heart rate and blood pressure. If you already have high blood pressure, nicotine gum can make it worse. Stop using the gum and notify your healthcare provider right away if you experience an increase in blood pressure or a fast, irregular, or forcefully beating heart.
