If you are not successful at quitting smoking with Nicoderm CQ (nicotine patch), alternatives are available. Other nicotine replacement medications and certain prescription medications are common alternatives. Many forms of nonmedication treatment, such as counseling, are also available that can help people stop smoking and may also be beneficial when used in combination with a smoking-cessation medicine.

An Overview of Nicoderm CQ Alternatives

Nicoderm® CQ® (nicotine patch) is a nonprescription medicine used to help people stop smoking. It works by keeping a low level of nicotine in the body, which helps reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms. The dosage is gradually reduced, allowing the body to slowly wean itself off nicotine.
Quitting smoking is very difficult. Many people may need to try different strategies to find the one that works the best for them. Oftentimes, a combination of strategies may work the best. Nicoderm CQ is one of many different treatment options for smoking cessation. Alternatives to Nicoderm CQ include:
  • Other nicotine replacement products
  • Certain prescription medications
  • Nonmedication treatment.
Other Nicotine Replacement Products
Several nicotine replacement products are available in addition to Nicoderm CQ. Some, like Nicoderm CQ, are available over-the-counter (OTC), while others require a prescription. Alternate nicotine replacement products include:
Like nicotine patches, nicotine gum and lozenges are available over-the-counter (without a prescription) to people over the age of 18. The nicotine inhaler and nasal spray are only available with a prescription.
Nicotine replacement products replace the nicotine from cigarettes to help reduce the physical withdrawal symptoms and nicotine cravings that occur when people stop smoking.
