Tiotropium bromide (Spiriva®) is a prescription drug approved for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics or antimuscarinics.
Although tiotropium comes in capsule form, these capsules are never to be swallowed. Instead, they are used in an inhaler. The inhaler punctures the tiotropium bromide capsule, and then the powder is inhaled using your own breath. It's important to make sure you understand exactly how to use your inhaler, as improper use may decrease the effectiveness of this drug.
