Atrovent for COPD
Atrovent® (ipratropium bromide) is a prescription medication used to treat a variety of conditions. It comes in the following forms:
- Atrovent HFA inhaler, for the treatment of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
- Atrovent inhalation solution (used in a nebulizer), for the treatment of COPD
- Atrovent nasal spray, for the treatment of a runny nose.
Atrovent belongs to a group of medications known as anticholinergics or antimuscarinics. When used for COPD, it works by binding to specific receptors in the airway; this action helps to relax the smooth muscle of the airway. Depending on the particular form of the drug and the particular medical condition being treated, Atrovent is taken two to four times a day.
