Common Side Effects in Adults

Linezolid has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials in adults. In these studies, one group of people received linezolid, while another group was given a different antibiotic. As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the other medication.
 
In these studies, the most common side effects of linezolid in adults included:
 
  • Headache -- in up to 11.3 percent of people
  • Diarrhea -- up to 11.0 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 9.6 percent.

Reactions to Linezolid in Children

The side effects of linezolid may be slightly different in children compared to adults. Just like in adults, linezolid has been studied in clinical trials in children, ranging in age from birth to 17 years old. In these studies, one group of children received linezolid, while another group was given a different antibiotic.
 
In these studies, the most common linezolid side effects in children included:
 
  • Fever -- in up to 14.1 percent of children
  • Diarrhea -- up to 10.8 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 9.4 percent.
  • Skin rash -- up to 7.0 percent
  • Headache -- up to 6.5 percent.
     
Other common reactions (occurring in 2 to 5 percent of children) included:
 
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Nausea
  • Loose stools
  • Shortness of breath
  • Irritation or skin reaction at the site of injection (with the intravenous [IV] form)
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain)
  • Generalized swelling.
