Letairis Side Effects

Extensive clinical studies have shown that some of the most common side effects of Letairis include swelling, nasal congestion, and inflamed sinuses. Although people tend to tolerate this medicine well, contact your healthcare provider immediately if you develop serious problems, such as signs of liver problems, anemia, or allergic reactions.

An Introduction to Letairis Side Effects

As with any medication, Letairis® (ambrisentan) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in many cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Letairis. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Letairis

Letairis has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking Letairis were documented and compared with the side effects that occurred in a similar group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.

In these studies, the most common Letairis side effects included:

  • Swelling of the body, especially the hands, legs, ankles, and feet (edema) -- in up to 17 percent of people
  • Nasal congestion -- up to 6 percent
  • Flushing (sudden warmth and redness of the face, neck, and chest area) -- up to 4 percent
  • Inflamed sinuses (nasal passages) -- up to 3 percent.

Some possible Letairis side effects have been reported "post-marketing," which means they occurred in the general population after the drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Because these potential side effects occurred in people taking the medicine in everyday life, as opposed to in a controlled clinical study, it can be difficult to know for certain whether they were actually caused by Letairis or by something else.

Reported post-marketing side effects of Letairis have included:

  • Anemia (low red blood cell count)
  • Loss of strength and energy
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Heart failure
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Increases in liver enzymes, which could be a sign of liver damage.
