Letairis and Breastfeeding

It is unclear if Letairis (ambrisentan) passes through breast milk. However, the manufacturer of the drug advises that women not breastfeed while taking Letairis. This medication is linked to potentially serious side effects, which could cause complications in a nursing infant. Before using this drug while breastfeeding, discuss the potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

Can Breastfeeding Women Take Letairis?

It is unknown whether Letairis® (ambrisentan) passes through breast milk. The manufacturer of the medicine recommends that women who are taking Letairis should not breastfeed. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding a child, talk with your healthcare provider before taking this medication.

More Information on Letairis and Breastfeeding

In animal studies, Letairis caused problems when given to pregnant rats during late pregnancy and while the mother rats were breastfeeding. More specifically, the drug increased the risk for death in the newborn rats at medium-to-high doses. At high doses, it also affected testicle size and the ability of the rat offspring to produce offspring of their own.

However, animals do not always respond in the same way to medicines as humans. Letairis has not been studied in breastfeeding women. Therefore, it is unknown whether the medicine passes through human breast milk, or if it would harm a nursing child. While this lack of information is certainly frustrating, it is important to keep in mind that studies of medications are rarely done in breastfeeding women, as this would usually expose an infant, who will not directly benefit from the medication, to possible risks.

Many medicines pass through breast milk. Therefore, because more information is not available, it is not unreasonable to expect that Letairis may pass through breast milk to some extent. Because Letairis is associated with potentially serious side effects, it may be safest to choose either breastfeeding or Letairis treatment, but not do both.

If your healthcare provider recommends using Letairis while breastfeeding, make sure to watch your infant for any potential Letairis side effects. Do not hesitate to report anything that does not seem right to your child's healthcare provider.
