Ipratropium HFA Inhaler

The ipratropium HFA inhaler is used to treat symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The inhaler is environmentally friendly and will not deplete the ozone layer. When you use the ipratropium HFA inhaler, it usually starts working within 15 minutes and lasts two to four hours. Side effects include bladder infections, sinus infections, and upper respiratory tract infections.

What Is the Ipratropium HFA Inhaler?

The ipratropium HFA inhaler (Atrovent^® HFA) is a prescription medication used to prevent airway spasms (also known as bronchospasms) caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD includes both chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Unlike older inhalers (including the old Atrovent inhaler, which is no longer available), the ipratropium HFA inhaler uses an environmentally friendly hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellant, a substance that does not deplete the ozone layer.

Side Effects of the Ipratropium HFA Inhaler

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with the ipratropium HFA inhaler. However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.

Some of the common side effects of the ipratropium HFA inhaler include but are not limited to:

Upper respiratory tract infections (such as the common cold)
Worsening of COPD
Sinus infections
Urinary tract infections (UTIs or bladder infections).
