Intal and Breastfeeding: An Overview
Intal® (
cromolyn inhalation) is a prescription medication used to treat
asthma. It is not known if inhaled
cromolyn passes through breast milk. Because of the potentially serious side effects that could occur in the nursing infant, the manufacturer recommends considering the possible risks and benefits before prescribing Intal for women who are breastfeeding. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding, make sure to let your healthcare provider know.
Intal and Breastfeeding: What Does the Research Say?
No research has been done to see if inhaled cromolyn is passed through breast milk. Because blood levels of inhaled cromolyn are usually low, it is unlikely that the drug would be passed through breast milk in high enough levels to cause problems. If your healthcare provider recommends taking Intal while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects in your child.
