Generic for Intal: An Overview
Intal® (
cromolyn inhalation) is a prescription medication used to prevent
asthma attacks. Intal comes in two forms: the
Intal inhaler and Intal nebulizer solution, which is inhaled using a nebulizer (a device that changes liquid medications into fine droplets that are inhaled into the lungs).
Intal was manufactured by King Pharmaceuticals. Although the patents for both Intal inhalers and Intal nebulizer solution have expired, only generic Intal nebulizer solution is available. No manufacturers have chosen to make generic Intal inhalers.
It should be noted that brand-name Intal products are no longer being manufactured. Generic Intal nebulizer solution will continue to be available, but there will be no more Intal inhalers available after pharmacies deplete their current supplies. If you are using an Intal inhaler, be sure to contact your healthcare provider about switching to a different medication.
Generic Intal nebulizer solution is sold under the name
Cromolyn Sodium solution for inhalation and is made by the following companies:
- Roxane Laboratories
- Ivax Pharmaceuticals
- Alpharma USPD
- DEY
- Apotex Corporation.
Is Generic Cromolyn as Good as Intal?
All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns each generic a rating. An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic Intal nebulizer solution versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Intal.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers or dyes or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with
allergies or sensitivities.
