Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a lung disease that causes inflammation and scarring in the air sacs of the lungs. IPF is a progressive disease, meaning that with or without treatment, the damage to the lungs will continue. Although there is no cure, there are treatment options that may relieve the symptoms. The main treatment for IPF is medications (such as prednisone) that reduce inflammation.
