Other Conditions to Consider Before Diagnosing IPF

The lung damage seen with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is similar to that caused by other lung conditions. IPF can also share a number of symptoms with other conditions. Therefore, before a diagnosis of IPF is made, a healthcare provider will consider other conditions. Some of these conditions include:

Asbestosis
Pulmonary fibrosis related to scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, ankylosing spondylitis, or Sjogren's syndrome
Damage caused by previous treatment with certain antibiotics, chemotherapy, or radiation
Amyloidosis
Lung cancer
Sarcoidosis
Cryptococcus
Pulmonary histiocytosis X
Respiratory bronchiolitis-associated interstitial lung disease (RBILD).
