Fortaz
® (
ceftazidime) is a prescription antibiotic approved for the treatment of a variety of different bacterial infections. It is given either intravenously (by IV) or intramuscularly (injected into a muscle).
Who Makes This Medication?
Brand-name Fortaz is made by GlaxoSmithKline.
Fortaz is a cephalosporin antibiotic. Cephalosporins are part of a larger group of medications known as beta-lactam antibiotics (named after the ring-like "lactam" structure of these antibiotics). Fortaz works by stopping bacteria from making cell walls, which eventually causes the bacteria to die. Cephalosporins are related to penicillins.
General considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Fortaz include the following:
- This medication is given by IV or by intramuscular injection, usually once every 8 or 12 hours (perhaps less often if you have kidney disease).
- When injected intramuscularly, a large muscle, such as the gluteus maximus, is used.
- For serious infections, it is usually best to give Fortaz by IV, not by intramuscular injection.
- This antibiotic is often given for a few days after the infection has cleared up. For serious infections, an even longer treatment may be recommended.
