Fortaz Drug Interactions
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Fortaz is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Combining Fortaz with an aminoglycoside antibiotic may increase the risk of kidney damage. Nonetheless, in some serious situations, such combinations may be used when the possible benefits outweigh the likely risks.
Birth Control Pills
Despite the long-standing belief that antibiotics interact with birth control pills, several studies have shown that almost all antibiotics do not increase the risk of pregnancy in women taking birth control pills. Nevertheless, there have been reports of birth control pill failure in women who have taken antibiotics. Ask your healthcare provider whether you need a backup method of birth control while using Fortaz (see Antibiotics and Birth Control Pills for more information).
Chloramphenicol may decrease the effectiveness of Fortaz. In general, these two antibiotics should not be used together.
Like other similar antibiotics that are removed from the body using the kidneys, Fortaz should be used with caution in people who take diuretics, since some diuretics can decrease kidney function. Such combinations may increase the risk of kidney damage. If you take a diuretic, check with your healthcare provider before using Fortaz.
