Aztreonam for Inhalation Solution

Aztreonam for inhalation solution is prescribed to people who have cystic fibrosis and have a certain type of bacterial infection. This antibiotic is inhaled three times a day, and works by interfering with the bacteria's ability to grow and multiply. Side effects are possible and may include a sore throat, stuffy nose, and wheezing.

What Is Aztreonam for Inhalation Solution?

Aztreonam for inhalation solution (Cayston®) is a prescription medication approved to improve respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing, and mucus production, in people with cystic fibrosis who have an infection with the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. P. aeruginosa is one of the most common causes of chronic lung infections in people with cystic fibrosis.
Aztreonam for inhalation solution contains the antibiotic aztreonam, which belongs to a class of antibiotics known as monobactams. The medication is used in a nebulizer, which is a device that turns liquid medicine into a fine mist that can be inhaled into the lungs. Aztreonam is also available in an injectable form called Azactam® (aztreonam injection), which is used to treat various infections, including infections of the urinary tract, skin, and lungs.

Are There Side Effects?

Just like any medicine, aztreonam for inhalation solution can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the drug will experience problems. Most people tolerate it quite well.
