Drug Interactions With Arformoterol Tartrate

Arformoterol Tartrate Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when arformoterol tartrate is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Beta Blockers
Taking arformoterol tartrate and a beta blocker together can decrease the effectiveness of both medications, since arformoterol tartrate and beta blockers work in opposite ways. Additionally, people with COPD should generally avoid beta blockers, as they may worsen their condition. While some beta blockers are less likely than others to interact with arformoterol tartrate, all beta blockers can potentially cause problems.

Certain Diuretics
Taking arformoterol tartrate and certain diuretics together can increase your risk of low potassium levels (hypokalemia). Talk to your healthcare provider before using these medications together. Not all diuretics cause this problem. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor your potassium levels more closely.

Corticosteroids
Combining arformoterol tartrate with certain steroids can increase the risk of low blood potassium. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor your potassium levels (using a simple blood test).

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Arformoterol tartrate should be used with extreme caution in combination with MAOIs. Life-threatening reactions could occur. Talk to your healthcare provider before combining arformoterol tartrate with an MAOI.

Other Long-Acting Beta Agonists
In no circumstances should arformoterol tartrate be used in combination with other long-acting beta agonists, as dangerous problems could occur.

QT-Prolonging Medications
Arformoterol tartrate should be used with extreme caution in combination with any medication that can cause an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia) known as QT prolongation. Life-threatening reactions could occur. Talk to your healthcare provider before combining arformoterol tartrate with a QT-prolonging medication.
